Red-crested cranes leave Kushiro wetlands as winter nears

KUSHIRO, Japan - Red-crested cranes gather for food on Oct. 28 at Tsurumidai in Tsurui village on the outskirts of the Kushiro Wetland National Park in southeastern Hokkaido. The cranes, designated by the state as special national treasures, spend spring and summer in the national park breeding and raising chicks and fly to Tsurui in late autumn to spend the winter.
