The winner was Tokyo-based sushi restaurant chain operator Kiyomura Corp., which remained the successful bidder for the sixth consecutive year at the market's New Year auctions, including 2013, when it paid a record 155.4 million yen for a bluefin tuna.

Tuna fetches 20 mil. yen at 1st auction of 21st century

TOKYO, Japan - The year's first auction is held Friday at Tsukiji Uoichiba Co., Tokyo's biggest fish market for professional marine-product wholesale middlemen. During the auction, a single tuna fetched a record 20.2 million yen.

New millennium's 1st globefish auction held in Shimonoseki

SHIMONOSEKI, Japan - Fish brokers stick their hands in a cloth bag, a traditional method of bidding on torafugu globefish, at the year's first auction of the fish at the Haedomari fish market in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, on Jan. 4. Market officials said the globefish, a kind of puffer fish often served as sashimi, in hot pots and fried, is selling for 23,000 yen per kilogram, down 5,000 yen from a year ago.
