TOKYO, Japan, -Jan. 5: A bluefin tuna fetched 74.2 million yen (around $632,000), or 350,000 yen per kilogram, at what may be the final New Year's auction at Tokyo's famed Tsukiji fish market before its relocation to a new site. The winner was Tokyo-based sushi restaurant chain operator Kiyomura Corp., which remained the successful bidder for the sixth consecutive year at the market's New Year auctions, including 2013, when it paid a record 155.4 million yen for a bluefin tuna.

Pair of Yubari melons sell for record high 2.5 mil. yen

SAPPORO, Japan - A pair of Yubari melons (foreground), a premium orange-fleshed cantaloupe variety from Hokkaido, are sold for 2.5 million yen in this harvest season's first auction held on May 13 at the Sapporo City Central Wholesale Markets. SHIMONOSEKI, Japan - Fish brokers stick their hands in a cloth bag, a traditional method of bidding on torafugu globefish, at the year's first auction of the fish at the Haedomari fish market in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, on Jan. 4. Market officials said the globefish, a kind of puffer fish often served as sashimi, in hot pots and fried, is selling for 23,000 yen per kilogram, down 5,000 yen from a year ago.
