Toshiba Elevator devises maglev elevator

TOKYO, Japan - Toshiba Elevator and Building Systems Corp. said on Jan. 17 it has developed a high-speed, comfortable elevator system (in handout photo) adopting the mechanism of magnetic levitation for the first time in the world. Unlike conventional elevators that go up and down on vertical guide rails, the newly developed elevator has magnets in place of wheels and moves without touching the rails. (Kyodo)

Toshiba to enter Japan's Blu-ray market after withdrawal from HD

TOKYO, Japan - Two presenters show Toshiba Corp.'s models of Blu-ray disc recorders and a player in Tokyo on Jan. 14, 2009. The company said the same day it will release the Blu-ray disc products in mid-February, entering the Japanese Blu-ray disc market for the first time since withdrawing from the HD DVD business following its loss in the battle to become the standard for next-generation DVDs. KDDI to add 3-D image service to 'EZ Navi Walk' system

TOKYO, Japan - KDDI Corp. said Monday it will offer three-dimensional images (in handout photo) for the ''EZ Navi Walk'' navigation service of its ''au'' mobile phone service, starting in late April. The new service will offer 3-D images of buildings and other objects within a radius of 50 meters from major intersections in Tokyo's 23 wards as well as 12 major cities including Sapporo, Yokohama, Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka and Fukuoka, KDDI said. Olympus set to launch capsule endoscope in Europe

TOKYO, Japan - Olympus Medical Systems Corp. said Oct. 13 it will launch a capsule endoscope (ih handout photo) for the small bowel on Oct. 24 in 33 European countries including Britain, France and Germany. The capsule, measuring 11 millimeters in diameter and 26 mm in length, will be swallowed to transmit two images per second to a recorder unit via a built-in antenna until it is expelled through the anus, the medical systems unit of Japanese camera maker Olympus Corp. said. Toyota to present advanced eco-friendly vehicle at Tokyo Motor S

TOKYO, Japan - Toyota Motor Corp. said Oct. 11 it will unveil the Fine-X (in handout photo), a new concept model for environmentally friendly fuel-cell hybrid vehicles that emit only water, at the Tokyo Motor Show beginning on Oct. 22. The vehicle employs Toyota's fuel-cell hybrid system that requires chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen as fuel to generate electricity. It also features unusually smooth drive thanks to ''four-wheel independent drive control and large, steering angle mechanism,'' the carmaker said. (Kyodo)

Maglev train makes test run

NAGOYA, Japan - Shoichiro Toyoda (R), former President of Toyota Motor Corp. and now head of the organizing body for the planned 2005 World Exposition in Aichi Prefecture, and Kohei Abe (C), chairman of the Chubu Economic Federation, take a test run on a high-speed magnetically levitated train Oct. 12, as the project's promoters geared up efforts to have the system put into commercial use for the first time in the world. The promoters aim to have the high speed surface transport (HSST) train in operation for the planned world expo in Aichi Prefecture.
