Gov't rejects uniform compensation for all hepatitis C sufferers

Ex-judge confesses he believed convicted murderer was not guilty

TOKYO, Japan - Norimichi Kumamoto (C), a former Shizuoka District Court judge, tells an anti-death penalty assembly in Tokyo on March 9 that he thought a man who received a death sentence for the 1966 murder of a family of four was ''not guilty'' when he was involved in the man's trial. However, he agreed to the death sentence after the two other judges involved in the case made the decision, despite preparing a 360-page document citing reasons for the innocence of Iwao Hakamada, who has been in prison for over 40 years while seeking a retrial for the murders. Kumamoto's remark came a day before Hakamada's 71st birthday. (Kyodo)

Mitsubishi Motors, former execs found not guilty over coverup

YOKOHAMA, Japan - Takashi Usami (R), former vice president of Mitsubishi and former chairman of Mitsubishi Fuso Truck & Bus Corp., Tadashi Koshikawa (C), Mitsubishi's former operating officer, and Akio Hanawa, former executive director at Mitsubishi, head for the Yokohama District Court in Yokohama on Dec. 13 to hear the court's ruling on them. The court found Mitsubishi Motors and the three men not guilty on charges related to falsifying defect reports on its truck wheel hubs, which resulted in a fatal accident in Yokohama in January 2002. Swindler Tomobe gets longest-ever jail term for lawmaker

TOKYO, Japan - House of Councillors member Tatsuo Tomobe (file photo) faces 10 years in prison, the heaviest punishment ever imposed on a lawmaker, after the Supreme Court rejected his appeal in a 1994-1996 swindling case. The Tokyo High Court last Dec. 20 ruled that Tomobe swindled 660 million yen, in a conspiracy with relatives, from 35 people in connection with management of a mutual aid society from 1994 to 1996. Tomobe, 72, elected in 1995, will also lose his upper house seat.

Ex-lawmaker Nakajima gets 2 1/2 years in prison

TOKYO, Japan - Yojiro Nakajima (C), a former member of the House of Representatives, enters the Tokyo District Court on July 14 to hear the ruling of his trial for bribe-taking and other charges. The court sentenced Nakajima to two years and six months in prison and imposed a 10 million yen fine for receiving 5 million yen in bribes from Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. in 1996. Nakajima appealed the district court's ruling to the Tokyo High Court the same day.
