OFF PHYKET, Thailand - Crew of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer Takanami recover an unidentified body believed to be of an adult man off the Thai resort island of Phuket on Dec. 29 shortly after they began searching for victims of Sunday's earthquake and tsunamis. An SH-60J helicopter on the vessel carried the body to Phuket airport, Japanese government officials said. The photo was released by the Maritime Self-Defense Force. (Kyodo)

TOKYO, Japan - A crew member of Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force fleet support ship Tokiwa gets a drink in a hallway of the vessel on June 6. Suspicion raised over apparent inaction by destroyer before coll

YOKOSUKA, Japan - Japan Coast Guard officials check the wreckage of the fishing boat Seitoku Maru, cut in half in a collision with the Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer Atago, at the MSDF Yokosuka Base, south of Tokyo, on Feb. 21. Coast Guard investigators suspect that the Atago could have neglected to take action to avoid the collision when it had a sufficient margin of time as provided for under the Law for Preventing Collisions at Sea.
