Plum blossom at Kairakuen plum park in Mito, Ibaraki Pref.

MITO, Japan - Flowering plum trees at the Kairakuen plum park in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, which marked the opening of this year's plum blossom festival on Feb. 20. Kairakuen, one of the largest plum-tree parks in Japan, boasts 3,000 plum trees of some 100 species. Cold weather has delayed the blossoming at Kairakuen this year, and only a fraction of the plum trees there have blossomed. The peak blossom-viewing time will be from early to mid-March. The plum blossom festival will run through March 31. (Kyodo)
