Civic group rallies against Japan's new medical care system

SENDAI, Japan - Members of a senior citizens group take to the streets in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, on April 15 calling for the abolition of Japan's new medical care system for people aged 75 and above that took effect on April 1. New health insurance fees were deducted starting April 15 from the pension payments of people receiving annual pensions of 180,000 yen or more. (Kyodo)

Chiba police on Nov. 6 arrested Minoru Kajimoto, the company's president, and six former employees on suspicion of swindling 18 people out of 6.8 million yen by selling them the bracelets. The police believe the company took in some 2.45 billion yen by selling the bracelets to roughly 8,200 people in 40 prefectures from January 2004 to April this year.               NAGANO, Japan - The Nagano District Court dismissed on March 10 a damages suit filed by a group of former Chinese laborers, and family members of those already deceased, who were forced to work under harsh conditions at a construction site in Nagano Prefecture during World War II. After rejecting the plaintiffs' demand for 140 million yen in compensation, Presiding Judge Jiro Tsuji took the unusual step of offering a personal observation, ''Preceding generations did some terrible things, and I wish I could offer (the plaintiffs) some relief.''
