Upper house approves bill to videotape interrogation of suspects

TOKYO, Japan - The opposition-controlled House of Councillors approves a bill June 4 to require police and prosecutors to record the questioning of criminal suspects, a measure introduced in the wake of a recent spate of court acquittals of suspects who have been wrongly prosecuted. (Kyodo)

Prosecutors ask for acquittal of man in murder retrial

Actress Sakai indicted over drug possession

TOKYO, Japan - Prosecutors indicted actress and singer Noriko Sakai (file photo) on Aug. 28 for alleged amphetamine possession, brushing aside concerns that the case could go cold as only a small amount was found at her home. The prosecutors are expected to file an additional indictment on a stimulant use charge on Sakai, 38, as the police have sent the corresponding papers. (Kyodo)

Ex-head of bill-collection agency held for fraud
