Linguist Ono known for unique theories about Japanese dies at 88
TOKYO, Japan - Susumu Ono (photo taken November 2007), a prominent linguist known for his ground-breaking research into the origins of the Japanese language, died July 14 of heart failure at a Tokyo hospital, his family said. He was 88. He stirred up active academic debate advancing a theory that Japanese shares common linguistic origins with Tamil, the language spoken in southern India, and evolved from that language.
