Witness account of Hiroshima bombing sent to Manhattan Project h

HIROSHIMA, Japan - Photo shows copies of an eyewitness account written by the Rev. John A. Siemes (1907-1983), a German priest of the Society of Jesus, of the Aug. 6, 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Time magazine that carried the account. A recently discovered document shows that the priest's account was sent in autumn of 1945 to U.S. Maj. Gen. Leslie Groves, head of the Manhattan Project. (Kyodo)

            A-bomb artifact sold for 45 pounds at auction amid criticism

            LINCOLN, Britain - Auctioneers explain an artifact from the Hiroshima atomic bombing in 1945 which was put up for auction July 11 in Lincoln and sold for 45 pounds (about 6,700 yen). An 81-year-old British man decided to sell a roof tile from a Buddhist temple which was damaged by the explosion. He was given the piece by Sairenji's priest as a gift when he traveled to Hiroshima in 1952. (Kyodo)

              NAGASAKI, Japan - Minoru Moriuchi, the 71-year-old head of a group of plaintiffs seeking recognition as sufferers of A-bomb related illnesses, offers flowers June 23 at an A-bomb monument in Nagasaki Peace Park after the Nagasaki District Court recognized 20 of the 27 plaintiffs as suffering from illnesses caused by radiation from the 1945 U.S. atomic bombing of Nagasaki, declaring illegal the government's refusal to grant them certification.
