Salvage work begins on fishing boat 5 months after sinking

NAGASAKI, Japan - The Daiei Maru No. 11 (C), with a fishing net covering half of its deck, is pulled up to the surface by a crane ship from a depth of some 80 meters off Hirado Island, Nagasaki Prefecture, on Sept. 22, 2009, where it sank on April 14 while heading to the East China Sea. The salvage work is being conducted with hopes of recovering the remains of 12 crew members who went missing in the accident. (Kyodo)

Aegis destroyer examined by marine accident inquiry officials

YOKOSUKA, Japan - Marine Accident Inquiry Agency officials examine the Maritime Self-Defense Force Aegis destroyer Atago alongside the quay at the MSDF's Yokosuka base in Kanagawa Prefecture on Feb. 19 after the destroyer collided with a small fishing boat earlier in the day in the Pacific off the coast of Chiba Prefecture. Fishing boat Zuisho Maru freed 7 months after seizure by Russia

KUSHIRO, Japan - The Japanese fishing boat Zuisho Maru No. 38, seized by Russian authorities in January for illegal fishing, berthed at Rausu, Hokkaido after it was released by Russia and towed back to Rausu on Aug. 14. The captain Takashi Kawabata and five other crew members of the 19-ton vessel had been released by the end of May. Russian authorities accused Kawabata of illegal fishing and imposed a 300,000 ruble (1.4 million yen) fine. (Kyodo)
