Vynova Factory - Mazingarbe

A sign reading "Seveso law" is seen in front of a part of Vynova factory, on April 1st, 2021, Mazingarbe, France. In Mazingarbe, a small town near Lens, Pas-de-Calais, the Madrid-based management of Maxam Tan, a Seveso-classified site, has deserted the company, which is located on a 160-hectare site, and abandoned its seventy-four employees. The latter, while awaiting the judicial liquidation decided by the commercial court of the European Metropolis of Lille on 13 April, are now the only ones to ensure the safety of the ammonitrate (nitrogen fertiliser) factory. This ammonia tank, still filled with 750 tonnes of product, must be emptied according to a strict protocol that only the Mazingarbe employees have mastered.
