The wetland receives over 60,000 migratory birds every spring and autumn, including many of rare bird species. According to local authorities, more than 1,000 Siberian white cranes have been spotted in the wetland this year. Rated as critically endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, the Siberian white crane, also known as the snow crane, only numbers around 4,000 globally. Huanzidong wetland is an important stopover on their migrating route. The local government has spent over 2 million yuan (300,000 USD) in protecting the wetland
