More than 15 Kenyan assistant locomotive drivers were inducted over the weekend and are expected to serve the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) upon the completion of rigorous training.
Afristar, the company that runs the SGR, will train the drivers for more than three months.
The program was jointly conducted by the SGR and the Kenya Railways Corporation. The training by Chinese engineers seeks to increase local presence in the SGR project.
The Chinese-built modern railway has been safely operated for five years. It's estimated that the construction and operation of the SGR have created 50,000 jobs for Kenyans.
Currently, there are on average six passenger trains and 17 freight trains operating along the Mombasa-Nairobi corridor on a daily basis, which have reduced journey time while guaranteein
