STORYLINE:
The Indian government's sugar export ban came into effect on Wednesday, officials said. The ban will be in place until the end of October.
Last week, the government decided to put a cap on the export of sugar to ensure domestic availability.
"Export of sugar (raw, refined and white sugar) is placed under restricted category from June 1, 2022, onwards," said a notification issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) last week.
However, the notification said with effect from June 1 until Oct. 31, or until further orders, the export of sugar will be allowed with specific permission.
Reports said the decision has been taken in view of the global situation which may trigger the demand for sugar.
