As a flagship project under Kenya's Vision 2030 transformation blueprint, the project started in 2019 with joint funding from the governments of Kenya and China. The 59-meter-high dam, occupying 600 acres (about 242.8 hectares) of land, will supply 70 million liters of water daily to nearly one million residents from Gatundu, Juja, Ruiru, and parts of Nairobi City. President Kenyatta, who was accompanied by the Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Zhou Pingjian, announced government plans to expand the dam so as to benefit more residents of Kiambu County.
