The 450-meter-long Makupa Bridge replaced the 1929 Makupa Causeway that was prone to heavy traffic congestion and became a threat to the marine ecosystem. China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) was the main contractor for the construction of the bridge. The Makupa Causeway was one of three roads linking the Mombasa Island with the mainland.
