STORYLINE:
Spanish researchers have found some partial remains of a 60,000-year-old Neanderthal skull at an archaeological site near Barcelona, the Catalan regional government said at a press conference on Thursday.
The team from the Catalan Institute of Paleoecology and Social Evolution (Iphes-Cerca) digging on the Abric Romani site in Capellades described the findings as "exceptional".
It is the first time that Neanderthal remains have been found at the site, which has been under excavation for 40 years under the supervision of the celebrated archaeologist, Eudald Carbonell.
The remains were unearthed on August 19, during this summer's excavation of a level of the site that corresponds to a 60,000-year-old Neanderthal deer hunting camp.
