It was among the 25 cities from 13 countries to be accredited last Thursday as international wetland cities during the 14th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties (COP14) to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. Liangping has been a "water town" since ancient times. It's crisscrossed by 408 rivers and dotted with 78 lakes, with wetlands covering about 11 percent of its total area. Liangping also shines in the protection and utilization of small and micro wetlands. Farmers grow rice, vegetables, lotus, fish, and shrimps in small and micro wetlands, including the district's many ponds and rice paddies.
