STORYLINE:
Christmas trees and lights began to be lit on the Champs-Elysees in Paris on Sunday evening, marking the start of the Christmas season in France.
The Christmas lights will be lit until Jan. 2, 2023.
Unlike previous years, the lights will be taken down a week earlier due to the energy crisis and will be switched off at 11.45 p.m. instead of 2 a.m.
Only on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve will the lights be lit for 24 hours.
According to an announcement by the Champs-Elysees committee on Sept. 20, 2022, the shortening of Christmas lights hours this year will realize energy savings of 44 percent over this period.
