STORYLINE:
A China-built hydropower project in Laos has brought development opportunities to remote mountainous regions in the southeast Asian country.
The Nam Ou River hydropower station project is developed by the Power Construction Corporation of China (PowerChina) under the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative.
It includes seven cascade hydropower plants along the Nam Ou River, which is the largest tributary of the Mekong River in Laos.
To carry out the project, 30 new villages have been built to relocate more than 10,000 local people.
