"A total of 1,979 people have been evacuated at 11 locations after Indonesia's Semeru volcano erupted on Sunday. Semeru is the highest volcano on Indonesia's Java island at 3,676 meters and also one of the most active."
Local authorities said they had been evacuating residents of the two nearest villages, and had warned other locals to stay away at least 13 kilometers from the eruption range.
