STORYLINE:
Mongolian khulan, an animal under state protection, has seen an increase in population at a nature reserve in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region thanks to wildlife conservation efforts over the past decades.
In the 1980s, the population of Mongolian khulan at the Kalamaili Nature Reserve was less than 400. According to the latest survey in 2019, the number has increased to over 3,000.
In recent years, the local government has stopped all eco-unfriendly projects at the nature reserve, carried out ecological restoration and built wildlife crossings for migrating animals.
