Handguns seized by Tokyo police in 1998 5-year-high

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) unveils Jan. 4 converted model guns confiscated at the house of a Nakano-kai criminal gang leader in September last year. MPD confiscated 281 handguns -- 40 percent of them converted from model guns -- last year, the highest number seized in five years.

            TOKYO, Japan - Police officers examine an apartment house in Kokubunji, Tokyo, on Aug. 21 where Hidekazu Tomono, 40, of the Tachikawa Police Station of the Metropolitan Police Department, and his 32-year-old female acquaintance were found dead. Police suspect Tomono shot the woman to death with his handgun and committed suicide by shooting himself with the same gun.

                TOKYO, Japan - Police show off in Tokyo on June 15 about 120 kilograms of stimulant drugs, the second largest haul this year, allegedly seized from the car of Hiroyasu Kitajima, leader of a gang affiliated with Inagawa-kai, one of the nation's largest crime syndicates. The drugs were seized after police arrested Kitajima and Wang Li-wei, a Taiwanese waiter who is believed to be a member of a Taiwan gang.

                  FUKUSHIMA, Japan - Kenji Kusunoki, a 54-year-old former professor of the private Ohu University in Fukushima Prefecture, leaves his home in the prefectural capital at 6:30 a.m. Jan. 6 before being arrested later in the day on charges of leaking and helping to leak questions on last year's National Dentistry Examination to his students. Itsuo Ueda, a 59-year-old Health Sciences University of Hokkaido professor who served on the national exam board and is suspected of providing the questions to Kusunoki, was also arrested by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police the same day.
