GSDF gets 1st woman helicopter pilot

Chie Hiramatsu, a 25-year-old second lieutenant of the Ground Self-Defense Force (GSDF), graduates Feb. 10 from its aviation school to become the GSDF's first woman helicopter pilot. Hiramatsu, a native of Kumamoto Prefecture, Kyushu, said she was among the first women to enter the National Defense Academy in April 1994 because she was keen on entering ''a world that had been closed to women.''
