Newly promoted yokozuna Musashimaru (R) performs the ''dohyo-iri'' ring-purification ritual at Atsuta Shrine in Nagoya on June 26 prior to the opening of the 15-day Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament on July 4. Musashimaru, who had secured his eighth Emperors Cup and first title of the year on Sept. 16, finished the championship at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan with a 14-1 record while Akebono's victory lifted the Hawaiian giant to his 13th win.
