Icebreaker Shirase opens to public in Akita
AKITA, Japan - The icebreaker Shirase is opened to public at Akita port Sept. 7. Shirase has sailed on Antarctic expeditions for 17 years and she will set sail again in mid-November. The ship was named after Akita-born Nobu Shirase, a Japanese explorer who led Japan's first successful Antarctic research expedition in 1912.
