Obuchi seeks tripartite accord on Diet seats

SAPPORO, Japan - Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi expresses hope Sept. 18 that his ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), its coalition partner Liberal Party (LP) and their potential ally New Komeito party would agree on a bill aimed at reducing the number of seats in the House of Representatives. Obuchi, stumping in Sapporo for the Sept. 21 LDP presidential election, said he wants to see the issue settled in the initial phase of an extraordinary Diet session so that the next general election would be held under the new formula.
