McHarg awarded Japan Prize

TOKYO, Japan - Ian McHarg (L), 79, a professor emeritus in landscape architecture and regional planning at the University of Pennsylvania, receives this year's Japan Prize in Tokyo on April 28 from the Tokyo-based Science and Technology Foundation of Japan. McHarg, who formulated his theories on ecological city planning in the 1960s, said ''unity with nature'' is essential in city planning.

Peter Ashton, 72, from Britain, a forestry professor at Harvard University, and Peter Grunberg, 67, of Germany's Research Center of Solid State Physics in Julich, also received the prize.
