Chinese sues Japan for 207 mil. yen over WWII forced labor

FUKUOKA, Japan - Zhang Baoheng, 76, walks into the Fukuoka District Court on May 10 to file a lawsuit against the Japanese government and Mitsui Mining Co., seeking 207 million yen in compensation for his time as forced laborer in coal mines in Fukuoka Prefecture during World War II. Zhang was joined in the suit by eight other Chinese who say they were conscripted to Japan in 1943 and 1944 and were forced to work for Mitsui Mining at its Miike and Tagawa coal mines in Fukuoka Prefecture.

FUKUOKA, Japan - Plaintiffs who brought suit against Japan and two Japanese companies over wartime forced labor of Chinese head to the Fukuoka High Court in Fukuoka Prefecture on March 9. The court dismissed the damages suit filed by 45 Chinese who were forced to work as laborers in Japan during World War II.

HIROSHIMA, Japan - A supporter of a group of Chinese plaintiffs holds a banner reading ''suit won'' after the Hiroshima High Court awarded damages in full on July 9 to the group who said they were forced to work in severe conditions at a construction site in Hiroshima Prefecture during World War II. The high court overturned a July 2002 lower court ruling that rejected the lawsuit brought by Shao Yicheng, 78, and four other plaintiffs four years earlier against Nishimatsu Construction Co., a construction firm based in Tokyo.

High court rejects damages suit against Japan by Dutch POWs

TOKYO, Japan - Gerard Jungslager (L), one of eight former Dutch prisoners of war who filed a lawsuit against the Japanese government to seek compensation for ill treatment at Japanese prison camps during World War II, speaks at a press conference Oct. 11 in Tokyo following the Tokyo High Court's refusal of their claim. The high court upheld the Tokyo District Court's November 1998 decision to reject the suit, which sought a total of some 20 million yen in damages.
