People commemorate eve of anniversary of end of Okinawa battle

ITOMAN, Japan - Representatives of the bereaved families of those who died in the 82-day battle between Japanese and U.S. forces in 1945 set alight a flaming torch at a peace memorial park in Itoman, Okinawa Prefecture on the evening of June 22, the eve of a memorial service there commemorating the 55th anniversary of the end of the battle. The Battle of Okinawa was one of the bloodiest in World War II, killing more than 200,000 people.
