Subway head resigns over March derailment

TOKYO, Japan - Kiyoshi Terashima, president of Teito Rapid Transit Authority, operator of a Tokyo subway network, bows at the Transport Ministry on June 27 after apologizing and announcing his resignation over the March 8 derailment of a subway train near Nakameguro Station on the Hibiya Line. The derailment left five passengers dead and 36 others injured.

The transport ministry is planning to consider installing the barriers on train and subway platforms to prevent passengers, particularly the visually impaired, intoxicated and elderly, from falling onto tracks, ministry sources said Aug. 14.

          TOKYO, Japan - Subway staff in Tokyo on March 20 mark the sixth anniversary of the 1995 gas attack on the capital's subway system by the AUM Shinrikyo cult, which killed 12 people in one of Japan's worst incidents of terrorism. About 30 employees observed 30 seconds of silence in front of a flower-covered plate set up in memory of the dead at Kasumigaseki Station on the Hibiya Line at 8 a.m., the time of the attack.
