Eruption of Mt. Oyama forces Miyakejima residents to evacuates

MIYAKEJIMA, Japan - Following the Aug. 18 eruption of Mt. Oyama on Miyakejima Island south of Tokyo, islanders take shelter at a gymnasium in Miyake Junior High School in the Izu district Aug. 19. The 813-meter volcano belched smoke as high as 8,000 meters. Experts said the Aug. 18 eruption was the largest in the past six weeks.

        MIYAKEJIMA, Japan - Some 280 of the remaining residents on Miyakejima, an active volcanic island some 200 kilometers south of Tokyo, leave the island on Sept. 2 in accordance with an evacuation order issued Sept. 1 by officials of the village of Miyake due to fears of massive pyroclastic flows. The 284 people boarded ships for Tokyo to become the first batch of islanders to leave after village head Ko Hasegawa ordered the evacuation of the estimated 800 remaining residents within three days from Sept. 2.

A local meteorological observatory said the eruption started at around 4:35 a.m. and called on residents to be on alert. The 813-meter volcano, some 200 kilometers south of Tokyo, has erupted several times this summer, with the last burst occurring Aug. 28 on a small scale. Smoke from the recent eruptions is streaming into Kanagawa Prefecture through Sagami Bay.

                    MIYAKEJIMA ISLAND, Japan - About 300 members of the Ground Self-Defense Force disembark from a Maritime SDF ship at Okubo beach on the northern part of Miyakejima Island on Aug. 21. The troops have been dispatched to help locals clean up volcanic ash from Friday's eruption of Mt. Oyama and fortify their houses with sandbags. About 42 special vehicles, including large trucks and bulldozers, were unloaded from the ship for use in the cleanup effort.
