Workers begin clearing Miyakejima's mud-covered roads
MIYAKEJIMA, Japan - Earth-moving equipment clears mud from a road near a private home in the Ako district of Miyakejima Island on Sept. 6, after heavy rains triggered mudslides on the volcanic island south of Tokyo. Emergency workers began the road-clearing work throughout the island after the slides stranded village officials and emergency personnel. Nearly all of the island's 3,850 residents have been evacuated following a series of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
