9th century signboard unearthed in Ishikawa Pref.

KANAZAWA, Japan - Minami Hirakawa, a professor at the National Museum of Japanese History, briefs reporters Sept. 7 on a ninth century wooden signboard believed to be the oldest of its kind ever found in Japan. The sign, made from Japanese cypress, contains 344 characters written in India ink. It was unearthed from the Kamo Ruins in Ishikawa Prefecture on the Sea of Japan.
