Senior defense officer arrested for alleged espionage

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows the Defense Agency's National Institute for Defense Studies in Tokyo's Meguro Ward, one of whose top officers, Lt. Commander Shigehiro Hagisaki, was arrested Sept. 8 on suspicion of violating the Self-Defense Forces (SDF) Law. Hagisaki allegedly passed defense secrets to the Russian military attache, identified by the Metropolitan Police Department as Victor Bogatenkov, 44, a resident of Tokyo's Minato Ward. Bogatenkov cannot be arrested as he has diplomatic immunity.
