Japan to field Owada as candidate for World Court judge
TOKYO, Japan - File photo shows Hisashi Owada, a former Japanese ambassador to the United Nations whom Tokyo is planning to field in the next election of judges for the International Court of Justice (ICJ) scheduled for fall 2002. A former career diplomat in the Foreign Ministry, 68-year-old Owada is currently president of the Japan Institute of International Affairs, a private think tank, and is the father of Crown Princess Masako. The ICJ, also known as the World Court, is the U.N.'s judicial arm.
