Akebono submits retirement notice to JSA

TOKYO, Japan - Yokozuna Akebono (R), sumo's first foreign-born grand champion, and stable master Azumazeki meet the press at Tokyo's Rogoku Kokugikan on Jan. 22 after Akebono submitted his retirement notice to the Japan Sumo Association (JSA). Akebono said he can no longer compete at the level of the sport's ultimate rank.
