Pleasure boat, freighter collide in Tokyo Bay

TOKYO, Japan - A tourist pleasure boat lies half-submerged in Tokyo Bay on Jan. 24 after a collision with a freighter. Eight of the passengers on the boat suffered injuries in the accident. The boat, a 40-ton floating restaurant used for pleasure cruises in Tokyo Bay, listed to port after the collision but managed to return to the pier on its own power.

The handbag-shaped handset is one of three hand-painted models designed by internationally renowned Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, featuring patterns of her brightly colored polka dot motif. The handset is expected to hit the market this summer for over 40,000 yen.

                  OSAKA, Japan - A 4.3-ton fishing boat is cut in two and capsizes after colliding with the 6,395-ton Panamanian freighter Mighty Dandy in the Seto Inland Sea off Kagawa Prefecture on May 7. Two people on the fishing boat were thrown into the sea, and one of them -- a 46-year-old woman -- was missing. The skipper of the fishing boat was rescued by a Japan Coast Guard vessel which happened to be near the scene, officials said.
