Honolulu lawyer urges victims to file suit over sub accident

HONOLULU, United States - Jay Friedheim, a Honolulu-based lawyer, urged Feb. 23 that the families of those missing from on board a Japanese high school fishery training ship sunk by a U.S. nuclear-powered submarine file a lawsuit against the U.S. government to clarify what caused the Feb. 9 accident. Friedheim, 51, said that doing so will help verify the credibility of U.S. Navy investigations.

Charles Griffiths, who conducted a preliminary inquiry into the collision, testified that the Greeneville was rushing through an emergency-surfacing maneuver when it struck the Ehime Maru because the sub was 45 minutes behind schedule after lunch for a group of 16 civilian visitors on board took longer than expected.
