Kelly stops Kiksis streak with win in int'l keirin

KUMAMOTO, Japan - Latvia's Ainars Kiksis offers a handshake to Australia's Shane Kelly (C) who halted his five-race winning streak to clinch his first win in the international keirin series on Kumamoto velodrome track May 8. Shaking hands with Kelly is runner-up Pavel Buran (R) of the Czech Republic. Kelly, the 1-km time-trial bronze medalist at the Sydney Olympics last September, had finished third, second, second, sixth and second in the previous five rounds. Kiksis saw his perfect streak come to an end, settling for third place.

        HIROSHIMA, Japan - Ainars Kiksis of Latvia (R) waves to fans in Hiroshima on April 16 after edging Australia's Shane Kelly at the finish line to make it three wins in as many races in cycling's international keirin series. Kiksis completed five laps and 2,015 meters on the Hiroshima velodrome's banked track in 3 minutes, 3.4 seconds to defeat 1998 series winner Kelly by three-quarters of a length for the second straight final in the series.
