Koizumi says will not raise tax to fix fiscal imbalance

TOKYO, Japan - Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, in one of his first performances in the Diet on May 9, pledges to mend the nation's deficit-ridden finances without raising taxes. ''A tax increase is not my goal,'' the premier told a House of Representatives plenary session in response to a question by Yukio Hatoyama, leader of the main opposition Democratic Party of Japan.
