Season's first snow crab catch auctioned

YONAGO, Japan - The season's first haul of snow crabs is put up for auction at Sakaiminato port, Tottori Prefecture, on the Japan Sea on Sept. 5. One case containing 30 kilograms fetched prices ranging from 53,000 yen to 25,000 yen, little changed from last year. Local fishermen said the snow crab haul at the port has been on the constant decline. Last year's catch totaled 12,330 tons, way down from the peak level of more than 30,000 tons.

                  SHINGU, Japan - Fish dealers examine tuna in the first auction of the year on Jan. 4 at the Katsuura Fishery Cooperative in Nachikatsuura, Wakayama Prefecture, one of the largest coastal tuna fishing towns in Japan. The auction of 36 tons of tuna fetched 17 million yen. The highest bid went to a 51-kilogram yellowfin tuna for 150,000 yen. The volume of tuna auctioned during the day and the amount in transactions were just half of last year's levels. Co-op officials attributed the slump to higher fuel prices and the reluctance of younger fishermen to go to sea during the New Year holidays.

                    YONAGO, Japan - Sent off by family members and other well-wishers, a Japanese snow crab boat heads out to sea from Sakaiminato, Tottori Prefecture on Aug. 31 as the fishing season for snow crab in the Sea of Japan starts on Sept. 1. According to the fishermen's cooperative in Sakaiminato, Japan's largest crab fishing port, the volume of snow crabs caught in the Sea of Japan has been declining gradually partly due to over-trapping. To conserve the snow crab population, snow crab fishermen in Japan have imposed a ceiling on the volume of snow crabs to be caught starting this year. Fishermen are also required to use trapping baskets with 9.5-centimeter rings to enable smaller crabs to escape when trapped. Japanese fishermen caught 10,952 tons of crabs in the Sea of Japan last year, 60 percent of them snow crab.

Last year's catch totaled 10,473 tons, compared with the peak haul of 31,754 tons in 1083.
