2nd cow suspected of having mad cow tests negative

TOKYO, Japan - Health, Labor and Welfare Minister Chikara Sakaguchi announces at a midnight news conference at his ministry Oct. 12 that Japan's second cow suspected of having mad cow disease has tested negative for the brain-wasting illness. The test result came after the Tokyo metropolitan government announced the discovery of a suspected second case earlier in the day, rekindling consumer and industry fears.

          TOKYO, Japan - Two health ministry officials tells a press conference in Tokyo on Feb. 21 that a dairy cow from Kanagawa Prefecture is highly likely to have been infected with mad cow disease. Confirmation is expected when the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare hears opinions from experts on Feb. 22 after the case was found in the process of the government-led initiative to test all cows for human consumption for the disease. If confirmed, it would raise the number of cows infected with the disease in Japan to 10.

A new survey by Kyodo News revealed that 33 of the 40 facilities producing or raising cloned cows in Japan are positive about sending such cows to the market for human consumption. The government is expected to lift a ban on the distribution of beef from cloned cows after the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry compiles a report on the safety of such beef, probably in the spring. If the ban is lifted, it will be the first such case in the world.
