Emperor greets well-wishers at palace on 68th birthday

TOKYO - Emperor Akihito (L), who marked his 68th birthday on Dec. 23, waves to well-wishers along with Empress Michiko from the balcony of Chowa Palace in the Imperial Palace compound in Tokyo. Other imperial family members, such as Crown Prince Naruhito, accompanied the emperor for the public appearance. But Crown Princess Masako, who gave birth to Princess Aiko on Dec. 1, was not present.
