Japan's last coal mine ends mining operations
KUSHIRO, Japan - Miners come up from Japan's last coal mine, run by Taiheiyo Coal Mine Co. in Kushiro, Hokkaido, on Jan. 9, marking an end to coal production in Japan before its closure at the end of January. All 1,000 workers at the mine will be dismissed when the mine is closed on Jan. 30.
