Kansai Electric Power creates coin-op electric vehicle charger

OSAKA, Japan - A handout photo shows a coin-operated battery charger for motorized bicycles and ultra-small electric vehicles jointly developed by Kansai Electric Power Co., Tohoku Electric Power Co., Hokuriku Electric Power Co. and Kyushu Electric Power Co. Using the charger, operated with 100 yen coins, a four-wheel motorized car can move an average of 10 kilometers per charge of one hour, Kansai Electric Power said.

            TOKYO, Japan - Honda Motor Co. will lease its fuel cell vehicle FCX (photo) in Japan and the United States from Dec. 2, the same date that rival Toyota Motor Corp. will start leasing its own fuel cell vehicle. The four-seat FCX, which uses hydrogen instead of gasoline as its power source, can run at a maximum speed of 150 kilometers per hour and can travel about 355 km on one tank of hydrogen. It will be leased for 800,000 yen a month under a 12-month contract, 400,000 yen lower than the leasing fee set by Toyota for its FCHV sport utility vehicle.

              OSAKA, Japan - A taxi driver with One Coin Taxi Co., an affiliate of Osaka taxi operator Shinnihonkotsu Co., holds a 500-yen coin outside his car in Osaka on July 12. The company started operation with a new service with an initial 2-kilometer charge of 500 yen amid intensifying competition in the taxi industry. The service, the lowest among major cities where a taxi ride usually costs 660 yen for the initial stage, will last for six months.

                    GIFU, Japan - Zero Sports Co., an auto component maker, said Dec. 27 it will start selling no-pollution electric vehicles (pictured in file photo) at a record low price of 1.8 million yen thanks to government approval of its application for a subsidy. The Gifu Prefecture-based maker has been marketing the electric vehicle under the brand name ''Zero EV Celo View'' since April at a price of 2.59 million yen. The Zero EV Celo View is a four-wheel mini truck with two passenger seats and a cargo space. It can be recharged at 100-volt sockets in ordinary Japanese houses as it has a 5-meter electric cord.
