TOKYO, Japan - A woman passes by a sedan in a Tokyo hotel parking area Jan. 22 in a prototype ''Q-Car 2010'' electric vehicle which toy maker Takara Co. plans to market in September. Takara said the one-seat car can travel 80 kilometers after being charged for 8 hours, and can reach speeds of up to 60 km per hour.

The green train, which debuted the same day, is the first new model deployed by the service's operator, East Japan Railway Co., since December 1997.           TOKYO, Japan - Honda Motor Co. will lease its fuel cell vehicle FCX (photo) in Japan and the United States from Dec. 2, the same date that rival Toyota Motor Corp. will start leasing its own fuel cell vehicle. The four-seat FCX, which uses hydrogen instead of gasoline as its power source, can run at a maximum speed of 150 kilometers per hour and can travel about 355 km on one tank of hydrogen. It will be leased for 800,000 yen a month under a 12-month contract, 400,000 yen lower than the leasing fee set by Toyota for its FCHV sport utility vehicle.

            TOKYO, Japan - Honda Motor Co. unveils the prototype of its FCX fuel-cell car (photo) in Tokyo on Oct. 22, with an eye to putting it on the Japanese market on a commercial basis by the year-end. The FCX, equipped with a 157-liter compressed hydrogen fuel tank, is capable of a maximum speed of 150 kilometers per hour and a range of 355 km once the tank is filled up. In the initial stage, Honda envisages leasing FCXs to government agencies and other interested parties in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

              TOKYO, Japan - Toy maker Takara Co. said July 9 it will release the first model in its Q-Car series of single-seat electric vehicles in November. The new car, called Qi and pronounced ''q-no,'' can be charged by plugging it into a conventional household electric socket. It can travel 80 kilometers after being charged for eight hours and can reach speeds of up to 50 km per hour. Takara will put 99 units on the market for 1.29 million yen each.

Using the charger, operated with 100 yen coins, a four-wheel motorized car can move an average of 10 kilometers per charge of one hour, Kansai Electric Power said.

                  TOKYO, Japan - A prototype fuel cell vehicle developed by Mazda Motor Corp. runs during an open test drive at the company's research center in Yokohama on June 12. The five-seat vehicle, based on the Premacy small passenger car and powered by a methanol reformer fuel cell system, ran at a speed of around 30 kilometers per hour. The fuel cell system was developed jointly by Mazda and U.S. automaker Ford Motor Co.
