Man to drive around Japan to promote Okinawa tourism

NAHA, Japan - Masanobu Ashimine stands by his car, which he will use to travel around Japan in a campaign to boost tourism in Okinawa Prefecture, in front of the prefectural government building in Naha on April 11. Ashimine, head of the Okinawa Sports Walking Association, will start his four-month trip in a camper on April 22.

Funeral held for Livedoor-linked brokerage exec Noguchi

TOKYO, Japan - Mourners head for Zojyoji Temple in Tokyo's Minato Ward on Jan. 22 to attend a funeral for Hideaki Noguchi. Noguchi, a former executive of a brokerage house linked with corporate takeover deals by Internet service firm Livedoor Co., committed suicide in Naha, Okinawa Prefecture, on Jan. 18. At right in the background is the Roppongi Hills complex, where Livedoor is housed.

Okinawa opens beaches for early arrival of 'summer'

NAHA, Japan - Children in Naha, Okinawa Prefecture, swim at a Naha beach April 6 as beaches were officially opened to the public for the early arrival of summer. The temperature in Naha was a little over 19 Celsius in the morning, with the water temperature at around 22 C, slightly chilly for swimming.

Civic groups rally against U.S. retaliation for terror attacks

NAHA, Japan - Civic groups in Okinawa Prefecture, home to the bulk of U.S. military forces in Japan, stage a demonstration on Septm 22 in the prefectural capital of Naha to protest against expected U.S. military action in retaliation for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington. About 100 people representing 33 civic groups marched through the city, yelling, ''The U.S. should stop retaliatory war.'' They also shouted, ''We cannot win peace by war,'' and ''The Self-Defense Forces should not send troops overseas.''
